In July 2000, GigaJoule Ltd acquired the coal broking business of Spectron Global Coal Ltd. GigaJoule developed the business as an industry-owned coal trading platform and, in April 2001, sold the business to a new vehicle (Global Coal Ltd) owned by Accel-KKR, Anglo American, BHP-Billiton, Enel, EON, EPDC (now J-Power), Glencore International, Rio Tinto and TXU.

Today globalCOAL is the foremost electronic platform for physical coal and related financial products. Its standardised 'SCoTA' agreement is widely used by the industry for buying and selling physical coal and its series of coal price indices are the only coal price indices published in the Financial Times.
